About our Master Meta-judge:
Each topic has a meta judge as listed below to determine the top award winning video in each category. The top videos in each category will be then judged by the Master Meta-Judge to determine the winner for the project. The Master Meta-Judge for this project is Alan Levine.Alan-Monterey.jpg

Alan is widely recognized for expertise in the application of new technologies to education and was a pioneer on the web. An early proponent of blogs and RSS, he shares his ideas and discoveries at CogDogBlog. More recently he has explored new forms of web storytelling (including 50+ Web 2.0 Ways To Tell a Story and the StoryBox), and tools for connecting and open sharing online.

Currently he is an instructional technology specialist at the University of Mary Washington, following leadership positions at the New Media Consortium and the Maricopa Community Colleges. When possible, he enjoys the peace of a little cabin in Strawberry, Arizona. His interests include digital storytelling, digital photography, bending WordPress to his whims, and randomly dipping into the inifinte river of the internet.

Master Meta-judge comments:
This was no easy task! I am impressed by the quality of the videos produced collaboratively, the research done to include relevant examples, and inventiveness in presentation. What struck me the most was the way these students have connected the technologies to what is relevant to them, both in and out of school. The winning entries I selected below struck a balance between addressing the issues brought by the technology and video production. I am pleased to see on all groups the use of and crediting their external media sources as well as ones that attempted to bring in a story line to their message.

Design and Technical Quality:
I was drawn to the videos that showed originality in their production, such as graphic illustrated style to the use of a talk show metaphor and the use of tools like xtranormal. I'd caution against going overboard with too many video effects- as often a simpler and cleaner approach is better. A number of the teams achieved excellent balance of audio when mixing with music, and I'd suggest for most that when these sources are mixed to lower music even more than you think is needed, or to question if background music is really necessary (often music can be between used as a bridge between sections). Probably the most challenging task with audio is normalizing the levels between sections recorded separately and/or with different devices, and reducing background noise and/or microphone buzz goes a long way to reduce distraction. Nearly all the videos were well edited in terms of cuts and not lingering too long on a point or an object.

Synthesis and Construction of Ideas:
A number of these topics are difficult for adults to synthesize, so kudos to the teams took on the more challenging topics. I looked for videos that dug into the topics and used examples to support their messages, but also highlighted the implications of these technologies for not only education, but society in general.. Even for the few videos that in my opinion could have gone a bit deeper on treatment, I saw attempts to explore issues or aspects that were not necessarily covered in detail in the original Horizon Report.

Judges comment: I was impressed by the comprehensive overview of this topic and its illustration of how it might come to be via concrete examples. This video was able to demonstrate clearly how this technology might come to be in clever ways through metaphors and real objects, and added a bit of clever humor that did not detract from the message

Second Place

Video #: 8.B.1Tablet Computing

Title of video: Table Computing
Judges comment: I enjoyed the clean video style in this project, use of music and the depiction of examples that both showed the technology and supported the message. The one caveta that is difficult to avoid is the dominance of iPads, and at least there should be mention that there are other key table devices out there.

Third Place

Video #: 8.C.2 "Game-Based Learning"

Title of video: Game-based Learning
Judges comment: The graphic style for this video was compelling and matched well with the topic, and was complemented by compelling narration. The synthesis brought together key points as well as addressing the positive and negative aspects of game-based learning.

Video #: 5.E.2 Computing Made Easy
Author: SadeB_AAHS
Title of video: Computing Made Easy
Judges comment: I was impressed by the juxtaposition of the hand drawn visual style and the use of gesture-based device (seen in reflection) for recording of the video. Ease of use is certainly the leading compelling aspect of Gesture-Based Computing and this video made a strong case for it- I might have liked to seen the drawing of the message on the iPad sped up just a tad.
